Letter: Education Freedom Accounts a big win for NH families

Portsmouth Herald

July 7 -- To the Editor:

The recently passed state budget contains a big win for low-income New Hampshire families: Education Freedom Accounts.

This new program will allow and give pathways of opportunity for low income students, some of whom may have special needs, to get funding to attend a carefully individualized private school or modest funding to support homeschool efforts.

We’ve seen fierce opposition from teachers unions on this program, who would rather keep in place a system that works for them and not for families. Throughout COVID-19 the unions have been pushing for fully remote schools, which hurts the poorest students the most. The teacher’s union will always look out for and advocate for themselves instead of New Hampshire families, so don’t get confused when you hear the teachers union is opposed to it - that means New Hampshire is putting students first.

Big thank you to Governor Chris Sununu and NH Republicans for fighting for and enacting this critically important program.
